Tracy’s, Almo’s General Store

Last Mortified:

Looking for a chance to visit some by-gone era? Visit Almo’s Tracy General Store. They’ve been in continuous operation  since 1894, serving the area for over 130 years.

Brothers William and Harry Eames, early Almo settlers, built a small log store  and a freight warehouse in 1894. The business grew rapidly, and they built a large log addition the next year.  Not long after, English bricklayers expanded the store, carefully laying the solid brick walls nearly  sixteen inch thick and made of locally kilned brick.    Recognizing the need for a gathering place in the growing community, the Eames Brothers  hired two Swiss bricklayers to add a  second story  accessed by an outside staircase.  Their traditional design and method of laying the thick upper brick walls created a unique exterior.  The upstairs was used for gatherings, dances, concerts  and entertainment including dramatic plays.   The store was the center of the community.

Through the years, the business was known as  Eames Brothers, the Eames/Tracy Store, Tracy Bros. Store,  Tracy Mercantile, and J.E. Tracy. It is now known as the Tracy General Store, operated by the Kent and Janis Durfee family.

The Tracy Store is proud of its heritage as a throw-back to days gone by.  The store’s antique cash register,  the McCaskey Bill Holder and other antique furnishings, all purchased between 1910 and 1915, are attractions located inside the store. Their friendly staff is eager to share the distinctive history and local flavor of  this beautiful Idaho gem.  They also serve many tasty goodies, especially locally-made ice cream and delicious fresh-baked cookies!

Tracy’s is a great place to pick up last-minute supplies during a trip to City of Rocks and other local areas.  Pick up cold drinks, ice, candy and all the goodies you need. Or, sit down and enjoy a sandwich or burger, cooked fresh. There’s usually a half-finished jigsaw puzzle on their front counter, so take a few minutes to fit in a piece or two. You’re sure to have interesting conversations with local customers, as they pick up their mail from  Almo’s post office, located inside the store. Turn-of the-century mail boxes and accessories are as functional today as they were over a hundred years ago.  Nostalgia abounds at The Tracy Store.

Most of the staff was raised here, so they can important information on others who live, or have lived in the area. The Tracy General Store provides all kinds of needed services to the Almo community and visitors.  Drop by anytime and visit with Tracy’s friendly staff! Looking for something in the Almo area?
