UP-01 Brigham City Construction Camp

  • Known for: The first Union Pacific construction camp in Box Elder County, since it was nearer to the rails coming west from Omaha; by the time the Union Pacific arrived in 1869, Brigham City was well established as a shipping and fright hub on several major pioneer routes heading north; the Gold Road, hauling ore from the goldfields of Montana to Salt Lake City to be assayed and refined, during the Montana gold rush of 1862, traveled through Brigham City, as well as the Salt Lake Alternate, used by immigrants to what later became Oregon, Idaho and California; during that time period, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, then known as Mormons, lived in the United Order, a communal social order, ns Brigham City was known as one of the more successful communities, living in this social order; Brigham City was an important stop by early travelers to take on provisions and rest for the next leg of their journeys; a more comprehensive discussion on Brigham City’s history can be found under the Brigham City listing in this site’s listing under Box Elder County, UT
