About Caribou County
Situated in southeastern Idaho, Caribou County was established on February 11, 1919, and named after the Caribou Mountains. The county seat and largest city is Soda Springs, a town renowned for its numerous natural springs and as the home of the world’s only captive geyser, which erupts hourly. The area holds historical significance as a prominent landmark on the Oregon Trail. Today, Caribou County’s economy is primarily driven by phosphate mining and processing, along with a strong agricultural base. The county encompasses a landscape of mountains and valleys, offering various recreational opportunities within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
