- Settled: Oakley Meadows Stage Station, the predicesso to Oakley, was established by William Oakley in 1870, about two miles west of present-day Oakley; a group of Mormon colonizers from Grantsville and Tooele, Utah settled near the Oakley Meadows Stage Station on June 1, 1875, and in 1876 the Goose Creek Ward was created; Frank Carl Bedke, a Prussian immigrant, settled east of Oakley in Basin in 1878; the first store, owned by George S. Grant opened in 188- and the village incorporated in 1806

- Origin of Name: Named for William Oakley, an early stage station operator
- Known for: Historic Victorian Homes & Home Tour, conducted every other summer; a unique product called “Oakley Stone,” an important construction commodity, shipped and utilized to an international market; once boasted a population of over 2,000 during the mining boom of the early 20th century; had a vibrant downtown, including: a flour mill, several saloons, various retail shops, implement houses, The Oakley Herald, a local newspaper, two independent banks & other businesses; its 1914 population was about the size of Burley; Clark’s grocery’s building, originally built as a ZCMI cooperative, has operated continuously for nearly 100 years; Howells Opera House, provides community theater each year; Howells Opera House building and Clark’s grocery building are both on the Idaho Historic & National Register; Oakley was the last stop on the Oregon Short Line Oakley Branch, with a two-story depot, wind mill, water tank and stock yard; passenger service connected Oakley to Burley during the line’s early years, but was never a major feature of the line; Oakley Dam, with Goose Creek Reservoir was built five miles south of Oakley and was during the 1930s the
