  • Settled: Newton, the most southerly of towns on Cache County’s West Side, was colonized in 1869. In 1871, after the Dave Reese bridge was built across the Bear River, many of Clarkston’s citizens relocated to Newton, since the snows were heavier around Clarkston than on the sunny slopes to the south 
  • Origin of Name: Originally named “New Town,” after settlers from Clarkston moved to the area; it evolved to be called “Newton”
  • Known for: Newton Dam was one of the nation’s first reservoirs, Cutler Reservoir, a much larger body is located to its south; Orrin Hatch, prominent US Senator from Utah is buried in the Newton cemetery   
  • Notable Features: Post Office, City Offices & Park, cemetery; general store; LDS Church
  • Location: 8.9 miles (11 minutes) northwest of Smithfield on Hwy 201
  • Population 2010 Census: 789
