  • Settled: In the spring of 1860, by 23 Mormon families, led by Ezra T. Benson
  • Origin of Name: The name was suggested by David Osborne; he also was going to name another nearby town ‘Joseph, ’ intending to honor the memory of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ founder Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, who were slain in Nauvoo, Illinois
  • Known for: Hyrum is home to Mountain Crest High School, South Cache Middle School, and several elementary schools; it is known for its lively 4th of July Celebration, as well as numerous local events; it also has a beautiful city office complex and library downtown, a Senior Citizens Center, museum and many other attractions
  • Notable Features: Hyrum State Park and Hyrum Dam provide numerous outdoor opportunities for family fun;  Hardware Ranch, located east of town in Blacksmith Fork Canyon is an elk reserve, where wintering elk herds are fed from wagons during winters; Hyrum boasts a beautiful series of city parks, a relaxed, comfortable standard of living in the south end of Cache Valley
