  • Settled: John Gibbs was the first to establish a homestead; he and George Foster built a little shanty of rocks in the spring of 1852; in the fall of 1855 Anson Call led a group of Mormon settlers to the area at the request of Brigham Young; many of the settlers were Welsh immigrants from Salt Lake City; in about 1869, most of the Welsh moved from Harper to settle in Samaria and Malad, Idaho
  • Original Name: First known as Call’s Fort after Anson Call, then North String, North Ward and Lakeside; Harper Ward has also become the name of the associated geographical region, not just the LDS church’s ward name; in 1871 the precinct was divided, with the south side called “Lake Side” and the north side “Calls Fort;” today the region is collectively known as Call’s Fort
  • Origin of Name: On 6 June 1906, its name was changed to Harper Ward in honor of Thomas Harper, the first LDS bishop in the area
  • Known for: The northernmost settlement in Bear River Valley until Honeyville was established in the early 1860s; settled largely by Welsh colonists, who came from Salt Lake; in about 1869 the Welsh settlers moved to settle in Malad and Samaria, Idaho; has agriculture and also some mining in the canyons east of the community
  • Location: 7.9 miles (11 minutes) north of Brigham City on Hwy 38
