  • Settled:  In 1860, the first permanent settlement in what would become Idaho, led by Thomas S. Smart
  • Origin of Name:  Franklin County and the townsite were named after Franklin D. Richards, an early leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, not Benjamin Franklin
  • Historical Overview: Early settlers thought they had settled in Utah, but a survey in 1872 showed they were just north of the state line; its location, barely into Idaho has been a financial boon to convenience stores and local merchants, as the first location of the Idaho Lottery, sometimes referred to as the “Utah Lottery,” because Utahns flock to the area to purchase lottery tickets since Utah does not have a lottery
  • Location:  Located 7.4 miles (8 minutes) south of Preston on Hwy 89 S, just across the Idaho state line
  • Population: 1,128 as of 2020
