    • Settled:  First traveled by LDS missionaries John W. Hess and Isaac Zundel in 1870s. Hess returned with one of his wives and others from Farmington, UT. Hess moved there in 1876
    • Origin of Name: Named for Joseph Fielding Smith, sixth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
    • Original Name: Called “Poverty Flat” and “The Flat,” since Fielding was an outgrowth of Plymouth, the community was called South Plymouth, and Hessville after John W. Hess
    • Known for:  Townsite located to accommodate Bear River Canal System. Land dispute between homesteaders and railroad, who owned much of the land; known now for its agriculture
    • Notable Features:  Fire Department, Post Office, Elementary School; LDS Church
    • Location: 10 miles (15 minutes) northeast of Tremonton on Hwy 13, then north on 4400 W
    • Population: 2022 Census: 591, up from 571 in 2020
