- Established: An 83 square mile area was established as a National Monument by President Calvin Cooledge in 1934; a presidential proclamation by President Clinton in Nov. 2000 greatly expanded the Monument area; the 410,000-acre National Park Service portions of the expanded Monument were designated as Craters of the Moon National Preserve in August 2002: the Monument is located in five counties: Blaine, Butte, Lincoln, Minidoka and Power; managed in a cooperation agreement between the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management
