Bridgeport, ID

  • Settled: Farmers brought their livestock to feed off the rich meadow hay as early as 1861
  • Original Name: First known as Fair Meadows or Franklin Meadows
  • Origin of Name: it was named for the bridge that spanned the Bear River in the area; the original bridge was biuilt on “cribs,” actually small log cabins, that were held in place by rocks in their bottoms; it had to be rebuilt several times after it washed out
  • Known for: Ranching, farming, deer & elk habitat
  • Early History: Ebeneezer Landers and William Bell first built a toll ferry on the Bear River; later after it was bbought by Nathan William Packer, who built the first toll bridge on the river; an important stop and stage station, where teams of horses were changed for the Overland Stage, owned by Ben Halliday; at one time, besides the stage station, it had a hotel, saloon, stores and livery stables; with the cdoming of the railroad in 1877, the once-important community dwindled; a natural hot springs fed into a swimming pool and resort, which operated as Del Rio Swimming Resort from 1920 to 1940
  • Location: 3 miles east of Dayton on the west bank of Bear River; 2 1/2 miles northwest of Preston on hwy 38
  • No population figures for this rural Franklin County, Idaho community
