  • Settled: The townsite of Clarkston was laid out in 1864, when Mormon Apostle Ezra T. Benson “called” Israel J. Clark and pioneers from Logan and southern Cache Valley to found Clarkston 
  • Origin of Name:  Named after Israel Justus Clark, an early settler and the first branch president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Clarkston. 
  • Location: 14.6 miles (16 minutes) northwest of Smithfield on Hwy 218
  • Known for: Martin Harris, one of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon, is buried in the Clarkston Cemetery; In 1869 the existence of the Clarkston settlement was threatened when a majority of its settlers moved to the present site of Newton, Utah, because of Clarkston’s severe winters and heavy drifting snow; but a few stayed in Clarkston, and the settlement grew on the foothills of the northern Wellsville range 
  • Notable Features: cemetery, post office, city offices; has evolved into more of a bedroom community, though local agriculture is still a major factor in the economy
