  • Settled: One account states, “In the spring of 1854, there were five families located at the springs they named Mountain Springs.” Settled in 1855; Thomas Green & others from Wellsville, Utah settled there in 1867
  • Original Name:  Hay Town, referring to the large hay fields there 
  • Origin of Name: Lorenzo Snow, then a Mormon apostle named it after his birthplace, Portage, Ohio
  • Known for: Cemetery, LDS church  
  • Notable Features: Area was first used as a grazing ground for livestock  
  • Location: 22 miles (22 minutes) north of Tremonton on I-15 N at exit 398, then west about 2 ½ miles on former Star Route 90; near the northeast corner of Box Elder county. Its northern border follows the Utah/Idaho state line in the Malad Valley
  • Population: 2022 Census: 288, up from 273 in 2020
