The Capitol Theater Sign in Brigham City

Last Mortified:

When is a sign more than a sign? One good answer is that when the sign is so well-known, it becomes iconic with its community. An excellent example is the well-known “Welcome to Brigham City- Home of the World’s Large Bird Refuge” sign that majestically spans Main Street in downtown Brigham City. But this recognizable icon is not the only vintage sign in Brigham City’s downtown.

For over 107 years, the Capitol Theater has been a consistent presence along Main Street’s eastside. The grand historic structure has provided entertainment for thousands of local residents since it originally opened in 1917. The theater is presently owned and managed by Kerry Walker and his two sisters, Patti Bennion and Shauna Timothy. Through the years, the distinctive structure has seen countless changes and improvements, but other than brief periods of time during remodeling in 1924 and 1984, the theater has operated continuously by Brigham City’s Walker family.

But then came Covid. The theater, long overdue for a facelift, had no choice but to shut down in compliance with the pandemic’s world-wide affects. And sadly, its once- regal marquee was badly in need of a makeover. Finally, after incredible amounts of time and capital repairs, the magnificent structure was ready to open- but before the theater could welcome back its guests, the sign had to be rebuilt, almost from scratch. Everyone involved understood that the sign must recapture its former glory. It didn’t just need to be fixed- it had to be carefully restored by someone who cared enough to regain its historical significance.

Long-term Box Elder resident, Matt Gilbert, owner of iSignz Co., had spent years in the sign business. During his tenure, he and his workers had elegantly restored a number of vintage signs, so he knew he and his workers had the expertise and experience to do the job right. And besides, he took a deep, personal interest in this restoration project.

Before iSignz Co., began restoring the sign, hours of research were spent to make sure the restoration would be historically correct. Matt spent hours researching old photos of historic Brigham City. In his words, he explained, “Working closely with our in-house graphic designer, Steven Peters, we strived to establish an accurate drawing of the original Capital Theater signage.

Matt continues, “There have been several speculations regarding the sign’s origins, with some suggesting it was purchased from the Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City. However, upon examining the earliest photos, it became evident there is significant potential the sign initially served as onsite advertising for J.C. Penney Co in Brigham City, as shown in the enclosed photo.

“I’d like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our installation crew, Kevin Monson and Robert Camilli, for their meticulous onsite work. From cleaning to preparation, painting the building and sign, including their craftsmanship in bringing the sign back to life with new paneling, lighting, and lettering, their dedication has been commendable.

“Regarding the design illustration, it’s crucial to credit the source appropriately. The refresh of the flag-mounted sign should be attributed first to iSignz Co. and our dedication to the project, particularly Preston Fain’s long-term professional relationship with Kerry Walker, has been instrumental.”

“Being a part of the Box Elder Community and contributing to this project fills me with immense pride. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be involved and to witness the revitalization of such a significant landmark

The refurbished sign is certain to spotlight the theater’s elegant presence, once more becoming synonymous with the careful reconstruction taking place in downtown Brigham City. Brigham City’s downtown will continue to recapture its quaint, historic and cozy feel. The city has matching funds available to update business facades in line with the historic district.
