Strawberry (Klondike), ID

  • Settled: Mads C. Hansen and his wife emigrated from Denmark to Mantua, Utah, moving to Mink Creek in 1879, then settled in Strawberr, with his three sets of twins and three other children
  • Origin of Name:  Named for the strawberries that grew there; the surrounding territory became known as Klondike, since the wintry snows reminded many of the Yukon’s Klondike
  • Historical Overview:The Strawberry log school became known as the “Woodpecker School’” since after it was abandoned it became infested with woodpackers;
  • Location: 7 miles north of Mink Creek on Hwy 36
