  • Settled:  Founded by brothers Robert and John Thornley and their cousin, Seth Langton, sent by Brigham Young to establish a community on Summit Creek.
  • Origin of Name: Named after John Grover Smith, the area’s first Mormon bishop
  • Original Name: Summit Creek, renamed 1859 to Smithfield, by LDS apostles Ezra T. Benson and Orson Hyde as part of their ecclesiastical duties 
  • Known for: Benson and Hyde told the populace their location was really “a city on a hill,” a reference to a biblical allegory; Smithfield Blue Sox, semi-pro baseball team; a temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is currently under construction on its west side
  • Local Celebrations: Health Days, celebrated in May is dedicated to improving the health of citizens; numerous local celebrations held throughout the year
  • Notable Features: Post Office, City Offices, a Carnegie Library, an active Recreation Department; churches, cemetery, fire department; bustling retail section; professional offices and other businesses
  • Location: 7.1 miles (11 minutes) north of Logan on Hwy 91
  • Population 2022:  14,067- 2nd largest population in Cache Valley
